Sumtseling
Monastery is affiliated with the Yellow Hat sect of
Tibbetan Buddhists and built by the fifth Dalai Lama. The largest
Tibetan Buddhist lamasery in Yunnan, the temple was built in
1681, and later almost completely destroyed during the Chinese
Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). The monastery has since been
reconstructed and is active again, housing 800 lamas.
Down the awesome gorges of Kham
flow Asia's mightiest rivers, the Yangtze, the Mekong, and the
Salween, descending from their sources on the rooftop of the
world. The magnificent Tiger Leaping Gorge in Dechen
lies at the point where Haba Snow Peak faces the Jade Dragon
Snow Mountain over the Yangtze River. The gorge is 35km long,
12km wide and plummets more than 3,000 meters. At its narrowest
point it spans barely 30m. |
